Quebec translation guide
Translating a driving licence for the SAAQ
To exchange a foreign licence in Quebec, the SAAQ sets who may translate the document.
Short answer
The SAAQ requires a translation by a member of OTTIAQ, ALCIT or a CTTIC member association.
The international driving permit is not considered an official translation. Bring the original documents to your appointment.
What to prepare
- The licence, front and back
- The driving record, recommended by the SAAQ
- The translation by an accepted translator
What is checked
- Categories and their dates, often on the back.
- Restriction codes and notes.
- The name as it appears in the passport.
The Japanese case
For a valid Japanese licence, the SAAQ does not require a translation, but a certificate from the Consulate of Japan.
The SAAQ sets its own exchange conditions by country: check them before booking an appointment.
Common mistake
Sending only the front of the licence, or a photo with glare on the lamination.
Best next step
Choose “Driving licence (SAAQ)” in the form: the translation is done by a translator the SAAQ accepts.
