Translating a marriage certificate or divorce
Sponsorship, immigration, civil status changes: the marriage record and, where it applies, the divorce judgment travel together.
Short answer
Institutions ask for the civil marriage record, not only the religious certificate.

What is checked
- Both spouses’ names as in their passports.
- The date and place of the marriage.
- Registration numbers and the registrar.
Marriage celebrated outside Quebec
To insert that marriage into the Quebec register of civil status, the original of a French translation made or certified true by an OTTIAQ member is required.
For sponsorship, the institution often asks for other proof of the relationship: check the checklist.
Common mistake
Leaving out the earlier divorce judgment when the file mentions it.
