International driving permit and driving record: what the SAAQ accepts
The international driving permit is not an official translation for the SAAQ. Why the driving record is recommended and which originals to bring.
Many newcomers think the international driving permit is enough for the SAAQ. It is not. Here are the key points.
The international permit is not a translation
The SAAQ does not consider the international driving permit an official translation. If your licence is in a language other than French or English, you need a translation by a member of OTTIAQ, ALCIT or an association that is a member of CTTIC.
The driving record
The SAAQ recommends bringing your driving record. It may allow you to skip certain steps of the exchange. If it is in another language, the same translation rule applies.
Originals at the appointment
Bring the original documents to the appointment, together with their translation.
The Japanese exception
For a valid Japanese licence, the SAAQ does not require a translation, but a certificate from the Consulate of Japan.
Order the translation
In the order form, choose “Driver’s licence (SAAQ)” and add the driving record if you have one.
