Certified or OTTIAQ translation: which one do you need?
IRCC, MIFI and the SAAQ have different requirements. What a certified translator means in Quebec and which translation to order.
“Certified translation”, “certified translator”, “OTTIAQ”: these words come up often. Here is how to sort them out.
Certified translator in Quebec
OTTIAQ is Quebec’s professional order of translators, terminologists and interpreters. The title of certified translator (C. Tr.) is reserved for its members.
What each institution asks for
- IRCC: a translator who is a member of a professional translators’ association, in Canada or abroad, or else an affidavit (details).
- MIFI: in Canada, a member of OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC or CTINB (details).
- SAAQ: a member of OTTIAQ, ALCIT or an association that belongs to CTTIC (details).
