Translators recognized by MIFI: OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC, CTINB and consulates
Quebec’s immigration department accepts translations from certain translators only. Who is recognized in Canada and abroad, and the notarial act exception.
For an application to the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI), the translation must come from a recognized translator. Here is the list.
In Canada
The translator must be a member of one of these bodies:
- OTTIAQ (Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec);
- ATIO (Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario);
- STIBC (Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia);
- CTINB (Corporation of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters of New Brunswick).
The translation department of an embassy or consulate is also recognized.
Abroad
- a translator who is a member of a professional order or authorized to act as such;
- a translator who works for the translation department of the issuing establishment, an embassy, a consulate or the relevant ministry.
What to submit
- the document in the original language;
- the original of the complete translation;
- the translator’s name and seal on the translation.
The notarial act exception
For some countries, MIFI accepts a translation without a translator’s seal if it comes with a notarial act: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Russian Federation, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine.
