Immigrating to Quebec (MIFI): document translation rules

For a MIFI application, any document in a language other than French or English must be translated by a recognized translator. Who may translate and how to submit the translation.

Quebec’s immigration ministry (MIFI) has clear rules for translated documents. Here they are in short.

Which documents must be translated?

Any document, or part of a document, in a language other than French or English must come with a translation signed and authenticated by a professional translator. Every element must be translated, including seals and signatures.

Who may translate?

In Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, the translator must be a member of OTTIAQ (Quebec), ATIO (Ontario), STIBC (British Columbia) or CTINB (New Brunswick), or work for the translation department of an embassy or consulate. Different rules apply to translations done outside Canada: see the Government of Quebec page.

How to submit the translation

  • the document in its original language;
  • the original of the complete translation;
  • each translation stapled to the document it belongs to.

Order the translation

In the order form, choose “OTTIAQ certified translation (MIFI, professional orders, Quebec courts)”. From $99, before taxes.
